Sleep Deprivation

yawn.....like millions all around the world, I've been watching the World Cup. Us poor viewers in Asia have been forced to choose between sleep and watching our favourite teams battle it out on the football pitch cos we're about 6 hours ahead of the German timezone (or are we behind? can never quite figure out time zones!) so while the English footballers are huffing and puffing in 35deg in German sunshine at 5pm, we viewers in Singapore are watching it in the middle of the night. And since my mother is not exactly a football fan, I have to decide between watching it in the comfort of my bed but in silence, or going out to the living room to sit on the sofa and being able to hear the commentary. The commentators are usually quite unbiased, but they seem to get very patriotic whenever the English team take to the field. I wonder why.

And I wonder if it's some perverse scheduling demon in FIFA that decided to have the teams playing at the hottest time of the day? In my sleep-deprived state, I wonder if that scheduler is actually a failed footballer, someone who never quite made it to the big time, and so decided to take his revenge on the spoilt multi-millionaire footballers by making them sweat buckets and risk heat stroke each time they take to the pitch!

A whole bunch of footballers are probably already petitioning their national associations to let FIFA know that the next time they choose a venue for the WC, to make it somewhere in the Southern Hemisphere so that they won't have to run around in the heat so much and risk their facial endorsements being taken away from them cos of sunburned skin!

Just in case you're wondering who I'm rooting for....why, Brazil of course! They may be underperforming, but they're still the best in the world!

viva Brazil!

Rainy day musings

Took the day off today to have some "Me" time....too bad it's been rainy all day!So much for living in a sunny tropical island, eh? Was hoping to spend time working on my blading skills (er hm, I am the world's worst blader since I've been learning for years but still can't stop without having a convenient tree/trashcan/person/anything nearby!

Ah well, guess rain is God's way of reminding us of the blessings that He yearns to shower on us. And I guess staying home gives me the opportunity to think...I'm taking time off to reflect on where I'm heading to in life. One of those crossroad moments, I guess. Have been in my present company for almost 7 years, longer than I expected to when I joined. Part of me still loves my job and believe passionately in the work that we do. But part of me is yearning for what's beyond that horizon....what challenges are there left waiting for me? I wonder what happened to that idealistic person who wanted to spend time working with the homeless, the orphaned and the widowed? I hope that person is still in me, somewhere, just need to find the courage to step out of my comfort zone to do something that would mean sacrifice....

Guess I still have to do some thinking....

Anyway, tonight, I'll be joining the billion or so who will be tuning in to the World Cup! Yup, a month of non-stop football lies ahead...Can't wait to see who will be crowned the champion on July 9th! Of cos, I'm hoping it's gonna be Brazil, but as we football fans know, anything can happen since the ball is round :-)
